What Do You Need to Play the Game?

For playing a 2 or 4 players game, under 13 card games rules, you will need to have two standard decks of 52 cards. Including their 2 respective jokers, for a total of 104 cards and 4 jokers. If you want to include an extra player, you have to use a third deck. This brings the card count to 156 cards and 6 jokers. A toss determines which player will go first. Each player will receive 13 cards, all facing down. Place the first card of the deck facing upwards, starting the discard pile. The discard pile is also called the open deck. The rest of the deck lays on the table facing down, this is the stockpile, also known as closed deck. From the stockpile, you can pick a card and place it facing up below the closed desk so everybody can see it. All the cards from that rank can be used as jokers, no matter the suit.

Goal of the Game

13 card rules (Also called Indian Rummy rules) have the goal to form runs and sets. When a player has been able to create all the required sets and runs, he can declare the turn. A valid declare must contain at least two runs. The first one also known as First Life, is a pure run, the second one, called Second Life, can be non-pure. Both of them must have at least 4 cards. When any player reaches the goal her or she can declare. 

13 Card Indian Rummy rules state that once a valid declare has been made, the rest of the players must declare. For them, all the cards count. Every player must meet the minimum requirement of two runs. Otherwise, the cards count as unmatched. If all cards are unmatched the player loses 80 points.

Dropping of the Game

In a 13 cards game rule playthrough, A player can drop of the game without discarding or picking any cards from the stockpile, at the expense of losing 10 points. If the drop happens in the middle of a hand, before any declaration has been made, the player will lose 30 points.

A sequence or run can use a Joker as a substitute for any missing card. That´s why the upside-facing card below the stockpile is so important. But there´s a catch, that sequence is non-pure. 

What about a Set? Under thirteen card game rules, a set consists of 3 or 4 cards, of the same rank but a different suit. A set can also include a joker. 

Three cards of the same rank and suit, (with the sole exception of jokers) work as a pure sequence. Any unused Joker can be omitted while declaring, with no cost of points. After calculating the lost points for all players, the winner can get the prize money.

What are the Types of Sequences?

According to Rummy rules for 13 cards, a sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. Rules say that you can have 2 types of sequences, Pure sequences, and impure sequences. 

A pure sequence is a group of at least three consecutive cards of the same suit. 

K, A, 2 is not considered a valid sequence. In order for a set to be valid, it has to follow the sequence A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A in a loop.

Another way to make a sequence is A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, A.

An impure sequence is when a printed joker or a wild card is used to create a sequence. 

If you have three cards of the same rank and same suit, you can try this as a pure sequence. This is only possible when playing with three decks. 

What Is a Set?

13 cards game rules consider a set when three or more cards of the same value but different suits are present. It is important to note that three cards must be of different suits, otherwise the set is not valid.
