Contract Rummy Card Game Rules

Number of Players 

3-8. Everyone plays for himself/herself.


If there are three or four players, a double deck with a joker is used (105 cards in total). If there are five or more players in the game, then a triple deck with two jokers (a total of 158 cards) is used with the same shirts and coloring.

Card Price

Aces, jokers, and free cards, if any, are worth 15 points each; each figure has a value of 10 points; the rest of the cards has the value, according to their face value.

Draw, Shuffle, and Withdrawal

A lottery determines the right to surrender. Players take one card from the deck.  The player who got the ace makes the first change- the lowest card. When using a double-deck, the dealer shuffles the cards. In the case of a triple deck, the dealer and one of the players will do the shuffling of the deck in parts. After shuffling, both parts of the deck are connected together. The player sitting to the right of the dealer will remove the card. If it is not possible to deal with the deck, the dealer can remove the top of the deck.


Each game consists of seven deals. The turn-to-deal cards move clockwise from the dealer to the player on the left. One card is dealt face down. In each of the first four deals, players receive ten cards. In each of the last three deals, players receive twelve cards. The remaining cards in the deck are placed in the center of the table as a reserve. The top card of the reserve is placed face up in the discard pile.

The Purpose of the Game

The goal of the game is to get rid of all your cards. You can do it by playing groups of three or more cards of the same value (regardless of suit) and sequences of four or more cards of the same suit.

Remember: In order to draw up a basic contract, you need six cards in the first deal, seven in the second, and so on, increasing by one card each time.

In cases where several sequences are required, they should be drawn in different suits or in the same suit without increasing in denomination, for example, 42, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, but not 42, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, which counts as one sequence.


Each consecutive player must draw the top card of the discard pile or reserve, and then discard. In the interval between taking and discarding a card, the player has the right to lay down cards corresponding to the combination laid out on the table. But he/she has no right to layout further combinations.

If a player doesn’t need the top card of the discard pile, the next player to his left can take it. In this case, the next player must also take the top card of the reserve without discarding a card. He/she then takes the top card of the reserve and play continues as usual.

You can set Ace high and low aside at the same time as a low card for a sequence that includes it as a high card, and vice versa.

Free Cards

  • You can use each joker to represent any card in a group or sequence.
  • If one of the players plays a wild in a sequence, any other player may include this joker in his hand, replacing it with the corresponding card.
  • \If several players claim such a joker, then the next player in line will receive preference.


The player who wins the game receives from each player: one point for winning the game and two more points for each joker used in his hand. Along with this, he receives one point for each deuce used as a free card (with deuces free).

You will get 10 points for going out without a buy-in; for an exit with a buy-in of only one card – 7 points; for an exit without using a joker (or a deuce, if the deuces are free) – 10 points; and for fifteen cards in the same suit – 10 points.

Rule Violations

If a player lays out cards that don’t meet the above requirements, he/she must leave these cards face up on the table. All points (chips) scored by such a player are subject to return. Any player who finds a violation has the right to take the indicated cards.
